SPECT-CT is a new hybrid imaging modality that combines the detailed anatomic data provided by CT with the functional data of SPECT system. SPECT/CT devices are the integrated devices that contain gamma camera, which has both CT scanner and SPECT feature, in one single patient bed. The attenuation correction provided by CT and the anatomic localization remove the low spatial resolution disadvantage of SPECT examination and makes the functional data obtained from SPECT examination more valuable.

SPECT/CT has superiority in many clinic indications when compared to conventional SPECT. These are; parathyroid imaging (displays ectopic parathyroid in a better way), wholebody scanning withI-131 in thyroid Ca patients, tumor imaging with I-123 MIBG, imaging neuroendocrine tumors with In-111m Octreotide, bone scintigraphy (benign and malign diseases), lymphoma imaging with Ga-67, sentinel lymph node scintigraphy, prostate Ca imaging with In-111m Capromab Pendetide and infection imaging.

For example, bone SPECT study with Tc-99m MDP has dropped the indetermined cases with 90%.

Since CT has accurate and full attenuation correction, the diaphragm attenuation that causes problem in the interpretation of myocardial perfusion SPECT studies can be eliminated with the aid of SPECT/CT.
